The Aswan High Dam
In 1889 the first Aswan
High Dam was built, which was one of the largest in the
world. Despite its height of 52m, the Old Aswan Dam was
inefficient and could not hold back the Nile's annual
flood. It wasn't until 1965, when the Egyptian President
Gamal Abdel Nasser, ordered the construction of today’s
massive High Dam, that the situation clearly improved.
The Dam is 111m high, 3.5-km long , and around 1 km
wide, which places it among the major tourist
attractions of Aswan.
